Lifeguard Certification Courses (15 years+)
You must complete a prerequisite swim test the Monday before the course start date. Tests are at 6 p.m., there is no charge for the test and pre-registration is not required. Here are some helpful tips.

  • We recommend a swimsuit, goggles and towel.

  • The test is a continuous 300-yard swim (12 pool lengths) consisting of 100 yards of freestyle, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of either freestyle or breaststroke.

  • You will be required to recover a 10-pound brick in 7-10 feet of water and swim with it on the surface, face out of the water and body toward the ceiling, for 20 yards back to the wall while keeping both hands on the brick.

  • Upon successful completion of the prerequisite swim test you must then register for the class and purchase a CPR mask. Registration and purchase of CPR mask will take place at the YMCA front desk.

  • Successful completion of all of the requirements will result in American Red Cross certification in CPR/AED & Lifeguard Training and First Aid.
