Swimming Programs

Heinrich YMCA

Water Babies (6-36 mos.)

Shrimp Introduces baby to water and safety through songs and games.
Kipper Introduces baby to aquatic environment, builds increased motor development and skills.
Inia Is for babies who completed Shrimp or Kipper. Underwater skills are introduced.
Perch Is for babies who completed Inia. Babies move independently with the help of parents and instructors.
Tuna Follows the Perch level and teaches skill mastery. Parent transitions out of water.


 

Preschool Swim Lessons (3-5 yrs.)

Parent with Child Is for children not quite ready to let mom or dad out of the pool. Children gain comfort as class progresses.
Pike Develops independent movement and teaches floating, kicking, and unassisted paddling.
Eel Is for children who can swim five feet unassisted, with face in water. Floating, kicking, and progressive arm movements are taught.
Ray Is for children who completed Pike or Eel. Children improve stroke skills, build endurance.
Starfish Is for those who completed Ray. This level refines front crawl and backstroke. Children move to Guppy upon successful completion.

 

Youth Swim Lessons (6-12 yrs.)

Polliwog Is for inexperienced swimmers. Basic water skills are taught, including floating, kicking, and paddling.
Guppy Is for children who completed Polliwog. It teaches rhythmic breathing, endurance, and paddling 25 yards on front and back, unassisted.
Minnow Follows Guppy and teaches children to swim 25 yards front and back in lap pool.
Fish Is for those who completed Minnow and can swim 25 yards nonstop. Swimmers learn butterfly and swim team skills.
Flying Fish Is for children who completed Fish and can swim 50 yards nonstop. Children refine butterfly and swim team skills.
Shark Follows Flying Fish, for those who can swim 100 yards of front crawl, back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and 25 yards of butterfly. Swimmers focus on endurance and swim team skills.

Centennial Hills YMCA

6-36 month-old

Water Babies

introduces little ones to the water in a nurturing environment.  Instructors guide parents through teaching basic water safety and skills with songs and games - a great first experience!  Lessons last 30 minutes.  One instructor per eight swimmers.
Skills Taught: water adjustment, breath holding, safety skills, floating, kicking

 

Preschool (3-5 yr.-old)

Pike 1

for beginners who can't swim independently with a flotation device.  It's also ideal for preschoolers who haven't experience swimming lessons in a class setting.
Skills taught: paddle stroke, water adjustment, blowing bubbles, floating

Pike 2

teaches underwater skills, floating, jumping and safety.  Endurance is a major focus, Swimmers progress to less floatation and soon swim independently without floatation.
Prerequisite: independent swimming with a floatation device (bubble)
Skills Taught: paddle stroke, rhythmic breathing, back floating

Eel

Prerequisite: swim independently with little or no floatation, comfortable floating on back, moderate underwater skills
Skills Taught: rotary breathing, sculling on the back, swimming without floatation (eel introduces basic front crawl concepts)

Ray/Starfish

Prerequisite: rudimentary front crawl, swim independently on back, swim 25 yards of paddle stroke (doggy paddle) independently without floatation
Skills Taught: front crawl, rotary breathing, back crawl, diving skills

 

Youth (6-12 yrs.)

Polliwog 1 for the non-swimmer who needs a floatation device (bubble) to swim independently.
Skills Taught: rotary breathing, front crawl, back float
Polliwog 2 Prerequisite: swim independently 25 yards without floatation device.
Skills Taught: rudimentary front crawl, swimming on back, treading water
Guppy Prerequisite: swim 25 yards with a rudimentary front crawl, swim on back.
Skills Taught: front crawl, back crawl, sculling, treading water
Minnow/Fish Prerequisite: efficient front crawl, back crawl, strong underwater skills.
Skills Taught: breaststroke, butterfly, diving, rescue skills, danger recognition

 

Adult Swim (13+ yr-old)

Adult Swim 1 Class is designed for beginner to intermediate swimmers
Skills Taught: basic swimming skills, underwater skills, floating, front crawl
Adult Swim 2 geared toward swimmers who have a basic understanding of front and back crawl but want to improve technique and/or endurance.
Prerequisite: confidently swim 25 yards paddle stroke, comfortable underwater
Skills taught: front crawl, back crawl, streamline, kicking, rotary breathing
