Preventing Childhood Obesity
Preventing Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is a major problem facing families in the U.S. Fortunately, it’s a problem that can be eradicated to ensure no children in our community is defined by obesity through their teenage years and into their adult lives.

That’s why the YMCA of Southern Nevada has partnered with Children’s Heart Center Nevada. Preventing childhood obesity is something we can do, and our programs can help children better manage their weight and enjoy rich, healthy lives.

Fitness Activities, Classes and Sports

Teaching kids the right way to exercise is important for building lifelong habits and preventing childhood obesity. Making sure exercise is fun shows kids being healthy and staying active can be just as fun as those more sedentary activities.

With a youth YMCA membership, or a whole family membership, kids will have access to a wide variety of age appropriate fitness activities, classes and sports. While each child and family will be able to pick between activities that sound like fun, a few of the offerings include kid’s gym, supervised swimming, group exercise classes and basketball for the younger kids.

Older children have access to all of the same activities, but they can also use cardio equipment and strength training equipment after orientation. After the age of 15, kids will have full access to all of the facilities, equipment and sports offered allowing them to stay healthy in their preferred manner.

Youth Swim Lessons

Perfect for summer, youth swim lessons teach kids how to swim safely, and get them interested in outdoor activities and exercise. Allowing children to participate in exercise activities that are fun, like swimming, is essential for preventing childhood obesity and developing consistent exercise habits.

Group and private swim lessons are offered at all 4 Las Vegas locations.

One-Day Camps

Keeping kids moving during the summer is important, and one-day camps offered by the Y are a great option to do so. These day camps include activities like sports, swimming, outdoor games, arts and crafts and more at a cost of around $40 per day.
